We'll just have to see if the experience picks up down the line. Because my time with Eternal Poison was limited, I might have not had the proper "warming up period" for it, but so far things feel uninspired and uninteresting. Furthermore, the entire package feels cheap, with little production value to speak of. Eternal Poison just doesn't have a well-told story so far. Narratives aren't properly structured and details seem to be all over the place. Even though I've tried to explain the story here, very little information is given to you when you start this game up that's extremely sloppy. Honestly, I have several problems with Eternal Poison after my initial impressions have settled. Of course a battle ensues to introduce the three new heroes, but nothing new in terms of gameplay is brought into the picture here. I, however, opted to pick up the tale of Ashley, Glynne and Reyna, who are heading into the demon realm Besek for their own reasons. Each story gives you access to a different group of characters, including one group that continues to follow Thage and Raki. It's here that you're allowed to select one of three branching stories. I'll+have+an+order+of+wings+and+a+tall+glass+of+you. Could the princess be that defenseless girl we saw at the game's beginning? All signs point to "yes." Seems like Valdia's princess has been captured and heroes from across the land are being recruited to rescue her. A cutscene plays to explain the context of these misadventures - a context that includes the kingdom of Valdia being threatened by the demon realm Besek, which suddenly popped into existence not long ago. After the tutorial battle is wrapped up, you're oddly taken back to the main menu where you begin the game proper. For example, command Raki to hang back and save up an attack and then when Thage's turn rolls around, Raki can spring into action. I also learned that when you have one of your characters wait out their turn instead of attacking, the leader character can order them to attack during his or her turn. Although I didn't have enough time to properly experiment with these features (even though they're sure to play a tremendous role later on), you'll be able to summon captured Majin into battle to fight on your side or sacrifice them to power up your characters. Once bound, you can spend another turn and capture the creature, adding it to your collection for future use. Once you whittle an enemy Majin down enough, you can force it past its Overkill threshold and place it into a bound state. Luckily, you can opt to turn off the battle animations to speed up the experience, but I would have preferred if the scripted scenes had just come up a tad bit faster. If you perform an attack or special skill, the scene switches to a battle animation that takes an annoyingly long time to load - very unfortunate indeed. Magic+signposts? At the start of the battle, I moved Thage forward and engaged a Majin. Regardless, battles are turn-based and you can move your character when his or her turn comes up and then you can have them perform one action. Thage and Raki walk you through the basics of battle, but a lot of material is completely untapped, including some of the more advanced statistics that can be seen from the character profile pages. Several Majin are present and your very first task is to defeat them and - presumably - rescue the aforementioned damsel in distress. During battle, Eternal Poison presents a traditional grid-based field where you view the action from an isometric perspective. Thage and Raki intervene and the game's first battle begins. As they walk calmly through a forest environment, they stumble upon a group of demons called Majin that are about to attack a defenseless young woman. The results were actually quite confusing.Įternal Poison aims to be a dark fantasy title that follows several adventurers' journeys to seek out the - go figure - "Eternal Poison." The prologue cutscene of the game introduces the mysterious witch Thage and her horned canine companion Raki.

In light of this, I spent a few hours with Eternal Poison to find out what gamers can expect when they boot it up. Although Eternal Poison hasn't garnered as much attention as a title like Persona 4, this strategy RPG could still be tempting for RPG enthusiasts as it approaches its retail release next week. PlayStation 2 owners are undoubtedly quite familiar with publisher Atlus, which has put out quite a few games (and still does) for Sony's last-gen console.
